The older we get the more we realize we are thesame person we once were but in an older body.I marvel at the reminders around me of 1969.The music, the cars, the reference to Easy Riderand movies of that summer. The ideals of peace and family back then are stillwith me. Whether our nation ever got close to theidea of living in peace here & abroad still seemsunattainable. Whenever we get near that end some-one changes the course. From the '70's I still relate to the same passionatesense of working with teen-agers but now when Igive advise I laugh to think I am a grandmother.Going to the grocery store and being carded to buybeer is a joke after 40 years of being legal drinkingage.Throughout it all there is still someone who remembersmy heart and my sense of humor. Someone half my agejust let me know she got the smart ass comebackcomments from me in the office. I feel honored! They shouldn't change seating arrangements in theoffice if they want others to remain professional at all times. When I feel lost or in need of a card or letter to liftmy spirits I know someone who remembers my heart will pull me through in this age of emails.I recently learned a valuable life lesson about peoplewho enter our lives because of the attraction they feelto our personalities. The problem sometimes in beinghonest & open to who you are is that some only talk a goodgame -they can't walk the walk. I never realized in allthese years that I became disappointed by those whoclaimed to be something they were not because theywere attracted to the life I live. I move fast and I movewith purpose as you may realize if you follow my blog.Someone in my life remembers who I am and is therealways in spirit to support my efforts. I am eternallygrateful for those few moments we share in emails orin phone conversations to catch up on all that transpiresin our lives.I hope someone remembers you and the feelings in your heart. There is the person I remember also and I knowtheir heart and hope I make them smile too.
While riding with my son & grandson a week agoI was listening to one of the final mixes of my sonand his band's new cd. The first cut is grandson's favorite because the chourus is, 'Ashes, ashes we all fall down.' This is a rock tune not a children's song. The next song is my personal favorite. All of asudden I shoot grandbaby a look as he sings,'I have no money to drink with. I need serious help.'I now tell my son that should be fun on the first dayof kindergarten if he is singing that. 'Call from the school, huh?' my son says.Yeah where my parent/teacher conferences ended hiscan now start. It will be fun to watch in a few years.
Not only is this '60's song part of my weekly playlist-it is a song I frequently revisit in terms of who I wasas a hippie teenager. I am still that person in terms ofmy beliefs.I was totally against the Vietnam Conflict and today amin the same frame of mind about the battles our militaryfaces today. Today the picture is much different as bravemen women face war side by side. Let's not even ventureinto the recruiting process when I tried to join the Air Forcein 1969. I was rejected at month's end because the monthlyquota for women was reached. I told my recruiter that wasthe one and only chance for my military service. Don't evenknow how I would have gotten through boot camp. I havenever used a firearm in my life -how could I then?Back to 'For What It's Worth'. What ever happened tothose ideals of everyone getting along? When did the Peace Movement become violent? 'How can anyone beright when everyone is wrong?' Take some time to revisit this Classic Rock song by theBuffalo Springfield and think about where our nation andits idealistic college students took a wrong turn.Music always reflects the culture of a certain period. This song along with Fortunate Son and a handful ofothers from the '60's will always raise the same questions.
Sometimes in passing I think there are things that alwaysremain unresolved. Maybe I can't believe that if wordswere spoken and taken as truth many years ago thenthat truth remains the same. I feel that you need to revisitconversations and parting words and reinforce those words. In my heart I know it's not necessary. If you commit to apledge or a vow then you need to stand by those words. In today's world people speak all kinds of 'truths' to othersbecause it's what the other person wants to hear. Sometimesyou can be hurt beyond belief if one of those shady charactersjust says words that have no meaning because they use themon you to get their way.I have always been a person of my word. I say what I meanand I mean what I say. This is not to say I don't make judgementerrors -oh I do. Those who know my heart will in time remindme that the old truths are not unresolved -they still stand anddo not need to be revisited.I daily thank God for those who have stayed true to their wordsand who hold a loving place in my heart & soul. That's resolved.
There are times of small conversation betweenmy grandson and myself where we discuss ournewsy events that interest us both.Over the Memorial Day weekend we had sucha chance to chat and catch up on the past week'sevents.I told him that his Dad introduced me to hisdaycare provider when we were at the same club listening to my son's band. I told grandsonthat she was a very nice lady. His reply,'Nana you are a very nice lady too!'Gosh has he got me wrapped around his finger!
When did it become ok to revert back to treatingwomen badly? Not only do men treat women badlybut women treat other women badly. Whether it begossip or just plain vulgar words that flow on theinternet. There is a 'worst dressed list' and every other kind of'put down' category in the media and even in our dailylives. I should also mention there is a fair share of 'male bashing' out there.Long ago I learned that women should be cherished. When we are cherished we excel -we nurture those around us-we share a partnership with our soulmate-we laugh more frequently-we feel fulfilled-we feel thecourage to defend our ideals and protect our domain. When I felt cherished I knew no boundaries. Now ifbeing cherished is not part of my daily life -I recallwhen I was cherished and I can do great things -smallthings-but with purpose.Women give the gift of life. That is why they are to becherished. This wondorous task does not belong to themale species -because he is to cherish & protect women. She will stand behind him in partnership and protect thechildren. If only it always worked that way.
Last night when I was watching my grandson I was in dinner mode. It's dinner time -he must be hungry. Surprise! He sees me come in the door and says, 'Nana-I want to dance! Dancewith me!' I say, 'Do you want dinner?' He says, 'No, let's dance -dancewith me.' I say as he takes my hands, 'Do you want music?' He replies,'Yes' as we head to the living room to find the right kind of music onMusic Choice. We need a little rock and roll but not metal-although heis used to his Dad's hard rock to heavy metal drum work.Several weeks ago I was riding with my son and grandbaby. My son was implored by grandson, 'Daddy play some music' Turning on theradio to a preset smooth jazz channel my son comments, 'Is this ok ordo you want rock?' Grandson says, 'I want ROCK!' So rock it was.Why don't we want to dance and listen to music? Sometimes the toddlersknow more than us.
